Customs

Toronto is Canada's most ethnically diverse city, with many immigrant cultural traditions, languages and music. Toronto is a business-minded, conscientious, socially progressive, and pluralistic city. It is a city of many museums, theatres, festival events and sports activities.

Electricity

The standard electrical voltage in Canada, and throughout North America, is 110 to 120 volt.  European and Asian plugs are not compatible with Canadian electrical sockets.

Tipping

Gratuities are seldom included in Canadian restaurants. It is customary to tip approximately 15 to 20% on the total bill before tax, less for poor service, more for truly exceptional service.

Taxes

The Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) of 13% is automatically applied to all purchases, with a few exceptions such as basic groceries.

Shopping and Business Hours

Shopping hours vary by shopping centre and location but stores are typically open Monday to Friday from 10:00am to 9:00pm , Saturdays from 9:30am to 9:00pm and on Sundays from 11:00am to 7:00pm.
