Charles-Edenshaw

Working at the turn of the century, Edenshaw's life and career spanned a period of great hardship and tragedy for the Haida people. During this time, the Haida endured devastating sickness and disease as well as mounting pressures to conform to a European lifestyle. Edenshaw not only survived this dark period, but he also continued to find ways to adapt and produce outstanding work, raising Northwest Coast art to new heights of elegance and sophistication. His work serves as a testament to a tremendous individual spirit and a singular talent. With over 200 objects assembled from public and private collections from around the world, this first major survey of Edenshaw's work features the full range of objects that he produced and is organized around five central themes.

One

A man, almost alone on stage, searches, finds, loses, forgets, rejects and ignores what he thought he always wanted to be. In this acclaimed autobiographical story, Mani Soleymanlou traces his journey from his birthplace in Iran to Montreal, passing through Paris, Toronto, and Ottawa. This journey leads him to question the authenticity of his own Persian origins, seemingly small and insignificant compared to today's Persian youth living in Iran, who must fight daily for their liberty, their freedom of speech, their country, and their lives.

The Seagull

The Seagull is a darkly comic tale of unrequited love - a story about how we create stories - and one of the greatest plays of the modern era. In it Chekhov explores emotion, creativity and romantic conflict with the clarity of a doctor and the heart of a poet. Peter Gill’s luminous version brings the characters into sharp focus as they struggle with love, failure, success, generational friction and the challenge of creating something of value through art.

Il Cappelo di Paglia di Firenze

The Florentine Straw Hat is an exhilarating comedy based on the famous nineteenth century French farce which inspired René Clair's classic silent film An Italian Straw Hat. Nino Rota - who was also a celebrated composer of film music, including The Godfather and many films directed by Fellini - co-wrote the libretto for Il Cappello di paglia di Firenze and composed the music in 1945. His witty and brilliant satire on the petty conventions of respectable society is presented in music in the tradition of Rossini, Puccini and Verdi.

The Heart's Jewel: Mendelssohn and Shostakovich

Also performing on Mon, Feb 3. When Shostakovich himself said of his Ninth Symphony, “Musicians will love to play it, and critics will delight in blasting it,” he should have also said, “audiences will love listening to it.” His Ninth is the most Classical of his symphonies, making it a good match for the music of two of the greatest Classically-Romantic composers, Brahms and Mendelssohn; especially the “heart’s jewel” that is Mendelssohn’s famous Violin Concerto.

Des Fraises en Janvier

Subtitled in English: Sophie and François wander between love and friendship. They like each other, but don’t want to commit. As Lea, freshly arrived from the countryside, looks for her friend Sophie in the city, François introduces his former lover to Robert, who already knows Lea quite… intimately. Things just get out of hand from there, with our four singletons alternately lying and telling the truth about how they feel and who they are, all in the name of love. And between the reality of these four lives and the script that François is writing, who can tell what’s real and what’s not?

Grupo Corpo

An audience favourite, the Brazilian dance sensation Grupo Corpo returns to DanceHouse with two new works. In Sem Mim, meaning without me, “tattooed” dancers merge the rhythm of the sea with the music of medieval Portuguese-Galician chants. The second work, Ímã, which means magnet, takes inspiration from the law of magnetism. Dancers passionately entwine and separate with poetic polarities. Grupo Corpo combines classical ballet technique with a contemporary re-reading of Brazilian and world dance forms. The end results are performances that are virtuosic, athletic, and breathtaking.
