Peppermint collaborates with One-MICHELIN-Starred Auntie Gaik Lean's Old School Eatery for an unforgettable Peranakan buffet experience!

For the very first time, Peppermint's Chef de Cuisine Leon Yee is proud to join hands with Chef Owner Beh Gaik Lean of Auntie Gaik Lean's Old School Eatery to introduce a flavourful selection of heritage Peranakan dishes, as prepared and enjoyed in Penang, Malaysia.

Auntie Gaik Lean's Old School Eatery is one of the four restaurants recognised with one MICHELIN star in the first edition of MICHELIN Guide Kuala Lumpur and Penang, Malaysia. Fondly known as Auntie Gaik Lean among fans and loyal diners, she is the fourth generation Nyonya who started cooking at the age of 12 under the tough training by her mother. 

After decades of perfecting and preserving Nyonya recipes, she is proud to share with Singapore her signature Nasi Ulam (steamed herbed rice with ulam), Egg Belanda (sweet and sour egg in tamarind sauce), Fish Curry Tumis (hot and sour fish curry), Assam Prawns (prawns stir-fried in tamarind paste), Beef Rendang (spiced beef in caramelised coconut curry), and more!

Auntie Gaik Lean's dishs complement Chef Leon's spread of treasured Peranakan heritage recipes from his great grandmother, showcasing all-time favourites, such as Ayam Buah Keluak (Chicken with fermented pangium edule seeds), Itek Sio (Braised duck leg with tamarind and coriander), Black Angus Beef Oxtail Pongteh (Angus beef oxtail, stewed with fermented soy bean paste), Blue Pea Rice Lemak, served with Spicy Coconut Floss, and more!  

This delectable showcase of fine heritage and flavours from Straits Chinese cooking is available for lunch and dinner from 17 March until 30 April. During the holy season of Ramadan, diners can enjoy complimentary refreshments, Iced Bandung and Pandan Iced Tea, specially concocted to kick-start Iftar.  

  • From now until 21 April, guests, aged 55 years and above, can enjoy weekday lunch for $55 nett*.
  • From 18 March until 21 April, children below the age of 12 dine for free* with every paying adult guest for weekend lunch only.

About The Chef

Chef Leon Yee, Chef de Cuisine, Peppermint

Chef Leon heads the kitchen of Peppermint, overseeing the daily kitchen operations, from menu planning, food cost and inventory management to quality assurance, and is personally involved in the hiring, training and development of all kitchen staff in Peppermint.

He was profoundly influenced from young by his mother and Peranakan grandmother, themselves avid home cooks. Incorporating precious tradition and knowledge gleaned from countless hours in the kitchen growing up, together with his professional culinary training, Chef Leon continually strives to improve and innovate upon his repertoire, constantly experimenting with different ingredients and techniques to craft interesting new recipes. 

Despite his relative youth, Chef Leon is no stranger to winning, with notable accomplishments including a Gold Medal at the Food & Hotel Asia (FHA) Singapore 2012, the Gold Medal and Overall Champion (Defending Champion) at Luxembourg Expogast World Cup 2014, and a Gold with Distinction Medal at FHA Singapore 2016 – awarded only to participants with perfect scores.
