BABA and NYONYA-Reunion

Singapore, 10 March 2015— From 30 March to 29 June 2015, immerse in the kaleidoscopic world of the Peranakan culture as Pan Pacific Singapore collaborates with home-grown artist Tung Yue Nang to present BABA & NONYA—Reunion, an eclectic collection of superrealistic mixed medium paintings reflecting the artist’s fascination and respect for the colourful and rich history of a culture unique to the Malay Archipelago.

Intrigued by its strong Chinese roots and adaptability to incorporate elements of the Malay lifestyle, Tung embarked on his exploration of the Straits Chinese culture through his artwork in the early 1990s. Using his signature technique of Photo-Realism, he expresses concepts such as Happiness, Love, Health, Wisdom and Longevity, presenting them on elongated Chinese scrolls to be appreciated alone or in multiple panels.
Tung paints iconic Peranakan objects such as plates, kerosang (brooch), kasok manek (slipper) and combs against lively reds, refreshing emeralds and lime greens, vibrant pinks and aquamarine blues reminiscent of Peranakan textiles and ceramics as expressions of beauty and pride. Often adding Chinese characters symbolising luck and longevity in different calligraphic forms to the pieces, Tung illustrates the rich heritage behind the culture while showcasing his flair in the Chinese writing form.

Tung was born in Singapore in 1959, and learned the traditional art of Chinese painting and calligraphy under the tutelage of renowned artist Shi Xiang Tuo at 15 years old. As a strong advocate and practitioner of Lao-Tzu’s philosophy of Tao Te Ching, he represents the ideals of Yin and Yang in his artwork to showcase tranquillity and the balance of life. Tung’s masterpieces are marked by his exceptional use of vibrant colours, with a strong penchant for the use of red to depict the goodness of life. Also taken with Western modernist art, he strives to combine Western art concepts and media with Chinese techniques in his works. Often stimulated by his surroundings, Tung continues to travel widely to exhibit his works and search for new sources of inspiration and nourishment for his journey in life and art.
