1. The Best Places to See in Singapore Near the Circle Line

Bras Basah Station (3 stops away from Nicoll Highway Station): To experience Singapore’s history writ large, spend a morning or afternoon at the National Museum of Singapore. Don’t miss the National History Gallery, which charts Singapore’s journey from 700 years ago to its colonial days, the Japanese Occupation, and its post-war struggles leading up to modernisation. Free guided tours are conducted daily in the late morning and early afternoon.

Esplanade Station (2 stops from Nicoll Highway Station): Singapore’s home for the performing arts, Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, was the subject of some affectionate name-calling in its early days. It’s been known as “marshmallows,” “soursops,” and the nickname that persists till this day, “the durian.”

If you’re visiting in the morning, book the 9:00am “Esplanade Tour,” which lets you peek under The Esplanade’s prominent insect-eye shaped domes. You will also visit the art venue’s state-of-the-art auditoriums such as its concert hall, theatre, and other front-of-house spaces. Along the way, your guide will regale you with stories about The Esplanade’s architecture and history, as well as interesting tidbits—like how the acoustically optimised concert hall can be tuned to sound like a small room or a huge cathedral!

Those who prefer a late-afternoon-to-evening excursion may join the Backstage Tour and Dining Experience. During this tour, you will not only gain access to exclusive areas that are off-limits to the general public, but also top your experience off with a feast of local dishes, or cocktails at the Esplanade Roof Terrace. Don’t forget to check the listings to see if you can take in a performance while you’re here! And make time to admire the world-famous Gardens by the Bay as well—it’s a short walk away, or you may choose to hop on the Circle Line and drop at the Bayfront station.

Harbourfront Station (23 stops from Nicoll Highway Station): This is the gateway to Singapore’s ultimate pleasure island, Sentosa. (From the station, you can either walk across the Sentosa Boardwalk, stroll to the nearby Harbourfront Tower Two building to take a cable car, or hop on the Sentosa Express train at VivoCity to reach the island.)

If you’re after maximum fun and thrills, you can certainly spend an entire day at Sentosa, checking out major Sentosa attractions such as:

  • Adventure Cove Waterpark

  • Fort Siloso (World War II attraction)

  • iFly Singapore (indoor skydiving centre)

  • KidZania Singapore (indoor theme park for kids to learn about the world of work)

  • Madame Tussauds Singapore (waxwork museum)

  • Mega Adventure Park (ziplines, tree-top obstacle courses, and other thrilling experiences)

  • S.E.A Aquarium

2. Fun Places to Visit in Singapore for Free Around the Circle Line

Botanic Gardens Station (13 stops from Nicoll Highway Station): Established in 1859, the Singapore Botanic Gardens is a national icon in the eyes of many Singaporeans, and the age-old park is also Singapore’s first UNESCO heritage site.

The lush grounds are best enjoyed at your own pace, as you take in the symphony of colours, textures, sounds, and smells. You can download self-guided walking tours to view the Gardens’ heritage trees, or stroll through its verdant rainforest, home to many tropical plants that are considered rare or endangered in Singapore. Alternatively, visit on a Saturday morning and join a free tour by an expert guide.

Haw Par Villa Station (19 stops from Nicoll Highway Station): Curious about Chinese mythology? Haw Par Villa was built by a millionaire philanthropist named Aw Boon Haw in 1937, to honour the traditional virtues that he had been raised with. The free-admission attraction is home to over 1,000 statues and 150 dioramas, depicting vivid scenes from classic Chinese literature works such as Journey to the West and the Eight Immortals. But most Singaporeans associate Haw Par Villa with its Ten Courts of Hell, which will give you an unforgettable lesson in Chinese morality—and the grisly consequences of flouting the rules. If you prefer a guide, paid tours are conducted daily at 9:30am.

Labrador Park Station (21 stops from Nicoll Highway Station): Why visit Labrador Nature Reserve? At this peaceful sea-facing haven away from the city centre, you will encounter diverse flora and fauna, see relics from Singapore’s World War II past, and be rewarded with a panoramic view of Singapore’s offshore islands from the lookout deck. Download the DIY walking guide and be on your way!

3. Where to Go in Singapore at Night close to Circle Line Stations

Holland Village Station (15 stops from Nicoll Highway Station): The Holland Village district was once populated by plantations, colonial estates, and nurseries. (You can still spot European influences in the area’s shophouses and low-rise buildings.) Today, the precinct has morphed into a hip neighbourhood where young Singaporeans go to chill out. Also known as Holland V, this is where you’ll find dizzying stretches of brightly lit restaurants, cafes, and bars, all clamouring for your patronage.

For dinner, consider some of the better-rated restaurants like Sanpoutei Ramen, La Nonna, and Nakhon Kitchen. If you’re dropping in post-dinner, head to Wala Wala, well-loved for its “live” music and good vibes, and the 2am:dessertbar after.

Marymount Station (11 stops from Nicoll Highway Station): From the station, take a short walk to Upper Thomson Road—it’s less glitzy than Holland Village, but no less lively by night. Popular cafe-restaurants in the area include Columbus Coffee Co., Pacamara Boutique Coffee Roasters, and Habitat Coffee. For ethnic cuisine, there is Daawat Tandoori (Indian), E-SARN Thai Corner, and Parker Korean Restaurant. To sample local food, try Chicken House, Ming Fa Fishball Noodles (open till 4:30am daily), or The Roti Prata House (open till 4:00am on weekends).

But if you’re just craving dessert in the wee hours, Salted Caramel opens till late on weekends, while local fave Rochor Beancurd House is open till 3am on most nights.
