Discovering Dalian’s Coast, Where the City Meets the Sea

Dalian thrives where the land meets the sea. This relationship shaped the local communities long before the first buildings rose along these northern shores. Here, the coastal lifestyle is woven into daily life, with locals who understand the sea’s changing moods like an old friend.

When temperatures reach a pleasant 21 to 28°C between June and September, visitors come to enjoy the warm waters. But there’s something special about visiting in early June or late September when the crowds thin out and the city can be experienced more like a local.

The cooler breezes make exploring more comfortable, and the relaxed atmosphere results from residents reclaiming their favourite spots.

Waterfront for Every Mood

Follow Dalian’s shoreline and discover how quickly its character changes. Old fishing villages sit next to modern developments, while buildings with European facades from the Russian occupation in the early 1900s add an unexpected touch to the city’s landscape. This mix of old and new gives Dalian its unique charm.

Fujiazhuang Beach offers a peaceful retreat from the busy city. Its golden sand curves between protective green hills, creating a natural haven. Visit in the early morning to see local seniors practising tai chi. Their calm movements are a gentle reminder to slow down and be present. It’s a wonderful way to start the day, especially to escape the usual tourist hustle.

The 500-metre stretch of beach is simple and beautiful, with fine golden sand that feels warm underfoot. The eastern boardwalk offers lovely views across the bay. Free from commercial clutter, this beach preserves a natural feel that’s becoming increasingly rare along China’s developed coastline.

While Fujiazhuang invites quiet reflection, Xinghai Bay pulses with energy. This is where locals come to see and be seen. The square facing the bay becomes a lively stage, with children learning to fly kites, couples walking hand in hand, and street performers drawing crowds. It’s the perfect place to people-watch and get a feel for daily life in Dalian.

As evening approaches, food vendors appear with their portable kitchens, filling the air with mouthwatering aromas. Try the grilled squid with salt, chilli and lime—seafood at its most delicious and straightforward. The night market atmosphere creates a festive environment where locals and visitors mingle, sharing tables and conversations.

About 50 kilometres from downtown, Jinshi Tan (Golden Pebble Beach) offers the best of both worlds—natural beauty with thoughtful development. Its main three-kilometre beach has excellent sand and swimming conditions that improve as summer progresses. Windsurfers glide across the water while families build elaborate sandcastles along the shore. The area feels more spacious than city beaches, giving people room to spread out and truly relax.

The beach also features fascinating rock formations shaped by wind and water over centuries. Local imagination has named many of these—one resembling a turtle, another a sleeping lion. A walk among these natural sculptures makes for a pleasant break from sunbathing and swimming.

Making a Splash

Dalian’s waters invite all kinds of activities. Catch jet skis zooming across Xinghai Bay, beginners trying to balance on paddleboards in sheltered coves, and experienced sailors becoming tiny dots against the vast horizon. Whatever the comfort level with water sports, there’s something to suit anyone here.

At Jinshi Tan, rent equipment and get instructions for various water activities. The consistent sea breezes create perfect conditions for sailing and windsurfing, offering a refreshing way to enjoy the outdoors even when inland areas feel hot. The gentle conditions make this an ideal learning place for first-timers.

After working up an appetite, visit one of the small restaurants nearby for authentic seafood. Steamed mantis shrimp with ginger and scallions lets the natural sweetness of the seafood shine through. Local specialities like sea urchin and abalone are also prepared simply to highlight their fresh-from-the-ocean flavour.
