Glimpse into Singapore’s Chinese Performing Arts at the Kreta Ayer Heritage Gallery

Address 28 Kreta Ayer Rd, Singapore 088995
Opening Hours
12pm to 8pm (Tuesdays to Sundays), Closed on Monday and Public Holidays

Dive into Singapore’s rich performing arts history at the Kreta Ayer Heritage Gallery, nestled in the heart of Chinatown. The area the gallery is housed in used to be known for Chinese opera, nanyin music (a genre of music which originated as court music during the Han Dynasty in China), Chinese puppetry, Chinese painting and calligraphy, and tea drinking.

Learn all about these bygone activities and nostalgic art forms at the gallery, curated to match different time periods and artistic forms. Look out for the costumes used in traditional Cantonese opera—sadly, this heritage art form is fast fading in cosmopolitan Singapore.

The gallery also introduces visitors to Chinatown's history and its evolution from the old days to contemporary times. There are also interactive components, allowing visitors to experience different traditional Chinese art forms. A puppetry stage lets visitors test their skills as puppeteers, while the multimedia section gives you the chance to play nanyin music. At the Chinese calligraphy station, try your hand at Chinese calligraphy using “invisible ink.”

If you appreciate tea drinking, you can learn the rich history of Chinese tea, and appreciate how brewing and drinking tea evolved into a cultural art form. You can also grasp the nuances behind different varieties of Chinese tea and how they can be paired with varying types of cuisine.
