Welcome To Perth: Preparing For Your Trip

How to Get Around Perth, Western Australia’s Largest City

Are you planning a trip to Perth? The capital of Western Australia, Perth offers an exciting mix of cosmopolitan pleasures and verdant scenery.

A gateway to the famous Margaret River region of lush vineyards, Perth is also near historic Fremantle and Rottnest island, known for rich wildlife and pristine beaches.

Bookmark Pan Pacific Perth's handy guide to learn how to get around Perth and get the most out of your visit.

Travelling from Perth Airport to the City

Public transportation out of Perth airport can be tricky because it has no rail line to the city. Depending on how much time you have to get downtown, choose from a private charter vehicle, taxi, or bus.

Private charter vehicles may be ideal if you are on a tight schedule or with a group. Drivers will meet and escort you to your vehicle. Vehicle services include Exceed Chauffeur Services (+61 410 669 525) and GranTourismo Range Rover (+61 419 998 887).

Prefer to hail a cab? Taxi stands are located outside each terminal. Or dial +61 131 008 for Black and White Cabs that serve Perth, or +61 13 13 30 for Swan Taxis. Uber is also available in Perth.

Consider airport bus services to Elizabeth Quay Bus Station downtown if you are not in a hurry. Transperth bus 380 travels from terminals 1 and 2, and bus 40 runs from terminals 3 and 4 to Elizabeth Quay Bus Station.

Getting Around Perth City: Bus, Car, Train, and Taxi Options

Clean and safe, Perth’s public transit system is formed by an extensive network of buses, trains, and ferries.

Government-operated under Transperth, Perth’s railway system and buses allow you to travel with a reusable SmartRider card that cuts 15%-25% off regular fares. SmartRider cards are available at Transperth Information Centres and retail outlets across town.

If you are staying downtown, you can also hop on and off the free Central Area Transit (CAT) buses that run daily in the city centre. CAT bus stops also have real-time route information that keeps you informed about bus arrival times.

Similarly, travel for free on any bus within the city’s free transit zone (FTZ). When travelling outside the Perth FTZ, however, do buy a ticket on board or pay with a SmartRider card.

Taxi stands are also located conveniently around the city. If you prefer to travel on water, you could catch the scenic Transperth ferry service between Elizabeth Quay Jetty and Mends St Jetty near the Perth Zoo. This ferry route runs long hours daily.

Getting To Know Perth’s Weather

Unlike cities in Australia’s southern tip, Perth weather is generally mild and comfortable. Dry and balmy summer falls between December to February as Perth is in the southern hemisphere. Temperatures range from 18°C to 30°C (64°F to 86°F) then, with breezy afternoons blowing the heat away.

Autumn in Perth from March to May is marked by warm, sunny days and comfortably cool nights. Temperatures fall between 14°C to 26°C (57°F to 79°F) with evening temperatures rarely dropping below 10°C (50°F). Occasional showers and humidity can crop up in autumn, however, so bring your favourite umbrella.

Rain and thunderstorms are common in winter, from June to August. Temperatures may fluctuate more widely during this season, so do dress in layers including a waterproof outer layer if possible. It can get quite chilly at night with temperatures running from 8°C to 19°C (47°F to 66°F) in winter.

Spring arrives in Perth from September to November with sunny days and little rain. Daily temperatures range from 12°C to 23°C (53°F to 73°F). Wildflowers blossom in Perth’s parks and gardens at this time, so if you suffer from hay fever, pop your medication in your luggage!
