Just four minutes on foot from PARKROYAL on Beach Road is Haji Lane, a one-of-a-kind district for hipsters and the artistically-inclined. Besides its funky-looking shophouses, the hidden haven is also home to a multitude of murals, each one a spectacular piece of art that reflects the rambunctious identity of the local youth community.

This narrow street, which faces high traffic due to its prime position near the Singapore Art Museum, is a relatively well documented spot. Local residents have probably seen its eclectic adornments at least a thousand times, but they never stay the same for very long, especially when artists collaborate to give the wall a makeover.

A little further away from PARKROYAL on Beach Road is Armenian Street, and situated beside the Peranakan Museum is a long yet petite wall covered in rainbow-coloured graffiti. Depicting buildings along the Bras Basah and Bugis areas, this work of art is in fact a commissioned piece by the National Heritage Board, honouring its 20th anniversary. Another spot for street art is The Substation, located just next doors, where the most impressive ones are hidden at the back of the building.

When one wanders through Jalan Pisang, it is impossible to miss the larger-than-life wall painting of a little Chinese girl caressing a lion cub, famously created by Lithuanian Artist, Ernest Zacharevic. The alley also boasts smaller advertising murals, such as the ones found near the café and bakery, Cake Love.

Another artsy district where a ton of cultural events take place, Aliwal Street is basically a “home base” for local street artists. For one, RSCLS, an urban art collective that includes renowned Singapore graffitists ANTZ, ZERO and SKL0, is one of the residents at the Aliwal Arts Centre. The art you’ll see meanders from the surreal to the semi-realistic, but are nonetheless ravishing through and through.

Directly opposite Aliwal Street is Jalan Sultan. There is a considerably smaller number of murals and artworks in this area, although the depiction of a family of chickens, and a boy on a tyre swing attached to a tree remains a crowd favourite. It is found on the façade of the Stuttgart Blackforest café at the end of the street.
