Melbourne's Coolest 'Burbs
Prefer to venture away from the hustle and bustle of the city? You will be happy to know that there are plenty of hidden gems located around Melbourne. Here are some of the city’s coolest suburbs to include in your itinerary.
Just a stone’s throw away from the CBD is Fitzroy—Melbourne’s funky town. With its doodled, sprayed, and stenciled walls, the technicolour suburb is a riot for the eyes.
Dating back to 1839, Fitzroy may be Melbourne’s oldest suburb. However, it is home today to a thriving street art community and some of Melbourne’s forerunners in the culinary and café scene.
While you are here, put on your comfy shoes and go on a self-guided street art tour by Weekend Notes. After the walkaround, enjoy a cold drip coffee at Industry Beans, recharge with an all-day breakfast at Brunswick St Alimentari, or soak in the views at the salaciously named rooftop bar and restaurant Naked for Satan.

There are many reasons to visit the National Gallery of Victoria. The first is that it is the largest and most visited art institution in the whole of Australia. The next is to capture a photograph of the dazzling canopy of stained glass—dubbed the Persian carpet of light—and possibly steal a kiss while you are at it.
Located in the great hall of the NGV International building on St Kilda Road, the cut glass artwork was created by local artist Leonard French in 1963. As he had not worked with glass prior to this, it took him five painstaking years to design and make it. The result, however, is a stunning masterpiece made up of some 10,000 pieces of hand-cut coloured glass, suspended 13 metres above the ground.
Who knows? While gawking at the stained glass artwork’s kaleidoscopic patterns, you may just see your loved one in a whole new light.

Have fun wandering around these alleys as you venture serendipitously through each nook and cranny, allowing your olfactory sense to lead the way.
