5. AFL Grand Final Parade
Address: | Yarra Park |
Date: | 27 September 2019 |
While the Melbourne Cup race is usually referred to as “the race that stops the nation”, the Australian Football League (AFL) Grand Final should be referred to as “the game that stops the nation”. Australian football (also called Aussie rules) is the ingenious sport of Australia played for over 150 years, since the 1850’s when it was originally called ‘Footy’ then ‘Victorian Rules’. If you are visiting Melbourne during the season and not just for the big Grand Final game, then you should absolutely watch an Australian Football Game and find out why it is a sport that has captured the nation, and to some extent, the world. Grand Final Friday is the eve of the big game and the day is also gazetted as a Public Holiday in Australia. There will be a parade that occurs along the Yarra Park, starting at The Old Treasury Building. The parade includes the two teams in the Grand Final game as well as marching bands and roving entertainers. If you did not manage to get your hands on a ticket to the game, the parade is a great way to soak in the celebrations and vibrant atmosphere that comes with these festivities. If you’re looking to watch the game, head over to a pub or restaurant in Melbourne. You will not need to look far to find a place playing the game!
