If your mother is nostalgic for her (or your) childhood, the kitschy, fantastic sculpture garden Haw Par Villa (also known as 虎豹別墅), will be a blast from the past.

Built in 1937 by Aw Boon Haw, creator of the Tiger Balm ointment, the park has changed hands and undergone refurbishments since.

Admission to most of the 80-year old park is now free. Featuring Chinese architecture and sculptures of ancient myths about filial piety and morals, its centrepiece is the Ten Courts of Hell.

Singaporean parents in the past used to enjoy walking their children through its gallery of garish sculptures depicting torture methods awaiting sinners in the underworld. By doing so, they hoped to scare their kids to grow up to be better persons.
