10 Best Concerts To Catch For Your Melbourne Holidays In 2017
Published: 3 June 2017
Lauded as the “World’s Most Liveable City” for seven years running, Melbourne is getting the recognition it deserves. Popular with travellers throughout Asia, the city is widely acknowledged to be Australia’s top cultural destination.
Australia’s second-largest city owes much of its cultural cachet to its iconic attractions, such as its art galleries and festivals. But its appeal also stems from its ability to attract international luminaries—music aficionados in particular will be spoilt for choice by the city’s offerings even as 2017 draws to a close.
Here are 10 upcoming 2017 events that music lovers in Melbourne can look forward to, brought to you by our Pan Pacific Melbourne team.

Enjoy electronic dance music fit for mass consumption, thanks to the leading earworm generators The Chainsmokers. The electro-pop duo entered public consciousness in 2014 with their breakthrough single “#Selfie.” Their propensity for churning out addictive tunes has paid off: they scored three Billboard Top 10 hits last year, were nominated for Best New Artist at this year’s Grammy Awards, and U2’s Bono is said to be a fan.
2. Stevie Nicks and The Pretenders, Rod Laver Arena, November 16

Renew your devotion for Fleetwood Mac and The Pretenders. This double bill is a classic 80s rocker’s fantasy fulfilled: two legendary frontwomen, Stevie Nicks and Chrissie Hynde, presenting their timeless repertoire and occasionally sharing a stage.
Hynde herself has charmingly confessed to being starstruck, gushing to an audience that guesting on Nicks’ tour was akin to “being on tour with Elizabeth Taylor.”

One of the most-streamed artistes on Apple Music and Spotify, Grammy-winner Drake has won hearts for displaying more vulnerability than his hip-hop contemporaries. Listening to Drake’s music allows you to embark on a sonic adventure through the dance genres that inform his work. On stage, the former child actor is said to possess a “showman’s ease” that helps him work the crowd.
Looking to catch a local Australian act? Vance Joy is your man.
Hailing from Melbourne, the indie singer-songwriter supported Taylor Swift during her world tour in 2015, but has since graduated to headlining his own shows. For a taster, listen to his evocative single “Georgia,” a fixture on many a coffeehouse playlist.
5. Lorde, Sidney Myer Music Bowl, November 26

Only 20, Lorde is famed for being a precocious talent with arrestingly husky vocals, capable of plumbing emotional depths that belie her age. Her ethereal presence is also worth making time for—prepare to be bewitched and hypnotised.
6. Heart of St Kilda Concert, Palais Theatre, November 28

The Heart of St Kilda Concert is an annual fundraiser for the Sacred Heart Mission, an organisation that helps Melbourne’s homeless and poor gain access to food, shelter, and support. The concerts have traditionally featured a roster of established artistes, musical newcomers, and popular comedians.
This year’s front-liners are no exception. They include music stalwart Leo Sayer (“You Make Me Feel Like Dancing”) and Melbourne-based alternative rocker Courtney Barnett, whose 2015 debut album was hailed by Rolling Stone as one of the year’s finest.
7. alt-J and Warpaint, Sidney Myer Music Bowl, December 7
Those tired of run-of-the-mill music can now recharge their senses with art rock bands alt-J and Warpaint. These energetic performers have sufficient radio appeal, yet delight in pushing boundaries musically and lyrically.
Both bands garnered critical acclaim for their “live” shows, making their acts a must-watch if you are in the city.
8. Jack Johnson, Sidney Myer Music Bowl, December 8
Surfer-turned-singer-songwriter Jack Johnson makes laidback music to soothe your soul. Folk singer Bahamas guests on his Australian tour—perfect for an evening of relaxation and introspection.
The alternative R&B superstar is in Australia for the first time, supported by special guests French Montana and Nav. Critics have painted him as a purveyor of doom and depravity under the cover of a Michael Jackson-inspired falsetto, but in concert, The Weeknd is a consummate entertainer who keeps the mood light, and by all accounts, this is likely to be the party of the year.
10. Muse, Rod Laver Arena, December 18
Musical alchemists and conceptual artists, alternative rockers Muse are performers with purpose. In recent times, the band has addressed heavier themes such as war and government oppression without alienating their fanbase. They tour Australia with their fellow band Nothing But Thieves.
