1. Getting Started with a Travel Bucket List
A bucket list is a list of experiences or achievements that you would like to have during this lifetime. Similarly, a travel bucket list is a travel wish list of places that you would love to see at least once in your life.
Why do we need a bucket list of places to travel to? Such lists are aspirational in nature—they help us to reflect on the experiences that we would like to have, so that we can take concrete steps to make our dreams come true.
Here are some questions to consider, as you put together your travel bucket list:
- If you won the lottery, where would you go?
- Which places have you always wanted to visit as a child, and why?
- Imagine yourself telling your grandchildren (or future grandchildren) about your travels. What stories would you like to share?
- Imagine yourself feeling completely relaxed and happy. Where would you be, and what would you be doing?
- Would you prefer to travel solo or with someone else?
- Which is the best place you have visited so far, and why did you love it?
- Think about all the places that you have visited before. What did they have in common?
- What is a perfect travel day for you?
- Is there a place that you want to visit because of a movie you have watched, or a story you have read?
- If the world were to end tomorrow, which places would you regret not visiting?
The easiest way to create your travel bucket list is to record your dream destinations in a notebook, an app, or a blog. You could also get creative, by sticking pins into a map displayed on a corkboard!
2. How to Budget for a Bucket List Trip
Depending on how exotic or elaborate your holiday ideas are, you may find that unusual travel destinations may be costlier than what you are accustomed to.
The solution? Budget for your trip way in advance, and save for it! Take your cue from individuals who prioritise travel in their lives, and set aside funds for their trips on a regular basis.
Before you do so, however, you will need to have an idea of how much your dream vacation will cost. Use this checklist to help you tally up your (estimated) travel bucket list expenses:
Number of travellers you will be paying for
Cost of getting to your destination
Duration of stay and cost per night
Daily car rental rate and gas expenses, if driving
Food expenses—how many meals do you plan to have a day, and what is your budget per meal?
Activities you would like to try, and their cost
Travel insurance
Cost of travel documents, such as visas or passports
Currency exchange and bank fees
Luggage and gear
Childcare and pet-sitting services
Prefer not to use an app or budgeting spreadsheet to track your holiday costs? You can enter your estimates into this travel calculator to derive your total budget.
One money-saving tip from seasoned travellers is to vacation during off-peak periods. This allows you to take advantage of discounts for airfares, accommodation, and attractions. And this is also why it is useful to have a list of bucket-list destinations handy, so you can select the destination that offers the most favourable deals.
To prepare yourself financially for your trip, there are no shortcuts—assess your spending habits to see how much you can allocate to travel, and how long it will take to reach your travel savings goal.
Hope to speed things up? Start by tracking your daily expenditure while finding ways to reduce unnecessary spending. Some enterprising travellers have also raised funds by selling used items, or tapping into side income opportunities. With discipline and resolve, you too can make it happen, just as they have!
3. Travel Considerations During Covid-19
What does travel look like after COVID-19?
Perhaps, the world feels less open than before, with more rules to abide by, and a widening chasm between those who hold different health concerns. In the current pandemic landscape, we must travel responsibly by respecting the health guidelines of our host country. And since there is nothing like falling ill to put a damper on any trip, staying healthy should be everyone’s top priority!
The first factor that you should consider is the COVID-19 risk level of your bucket-list travel destination. For an overview of risk levels worldwide, you can use the Global Epidemics dashboard by the Brown School of Public Health, which ranks countries by the number of daily cases per 100,000 people.
Another statistic to look at is the vaccination rate by country. Ideally, you would want to choose a travel destination with a lower daily case rate, and a higher vaccination rate.
Once you have decided which countries are ‘safe’ to visit, you should proceed to research their COVID-19 entry requirements. International airlines will usually list such information on their websites. For instance, Emirates has a Travel Requirements by Destination page that is regularly updated. On the page, you will also find links to authorised laboratories for COVID-19 testing.
If you are unvaccinated, or intend to travel with unvaccinated family members, you may want to consider safer travel options, such as sticking to outdoor activities, and choosing an accommodation with excellent health practices. Guests with the Pan Pacific Hotels Group can be reassured that we have implemented Pan Pacific Cares—a set of safety and cleaning protocols in accordance with World Health Organization guidelines—across all our hotels worldwide.
In addition, do remember to purchase travel insurance, which is a must in this new era of unpredictability. Some countries have even made it mandatory for visitors to have adequate health insurance coverage for COVID-19 medical treatment and hospitalisation costs.
When choosing a COVID-19 travel insurance policy, do ask about:
Coverage for trip cancellations based on border closures and government travel advisories
Overseas quarantine coverage (if you should test positive for COVID-19 during your travels)
Overseas medical consultation and treatment coverage
Overseas hospitalisation coverage
Repatriation coverage
Trip curtailment coverage
