6 Kid-Friendly Activities for a Family Staycation in Whistler

Looking for things to do in Whistler with the kids this winter? Look no further than the Whistler Blackcomb ski resort in British Columbia, Canada.

Did you know that Whistler Mountain was once known as London Mountain? The base of the mountain is often covered in fog, which London is famous for. Whistler Mountain’s eventual name was inspired by the unique whistling noises made by the hoary marmot who lives in Whistler.

Today, Whistler Mountain is the ultimate family playground. With sweeping mountain views and an abundance of holiday activities, there are plenty of unique family-friendly options to choose from. If you are considering a Whistler staycation for Christmas, or to celebrate the New Year, the teams at Pan Pacific Whistler Mountainside and Pan Pacific Whistler Village Centre have put together a list of staycation or holiday activities that your whole family can enjoy.

Put on your winter wear, don your ski gloves and boots, and join us in exploring Whistler’s winter wonderland!

Fly through treetops and over a canyon for an exhilarating experience. In Whistler, ziplining is not just an extreme sporting activity, but a breathtaking one. There is nothing quite like the adrenaline rush you feel after zooming down the picturesque mountains at breakneck speed.

Different tour options are available for ziplining in Whistler, for kids as young as six. Depending on which tour you are on, you will be taken through a winter wonderland of ancient powder-coated forests. Each tour is slightly different—you may find yourself zipping down five different ziplines, or crossing 2,400 feet with a 30-storey descent. In between each adventure, you can cross treetop suspension bridges and soak in the stunning winter-scape views from sky-high viewing platforms.

If you can walk, you can snowshoe. One of the easiest ways to explore Whistler’s wintry mountains, snowshoeing allows you to traverse the snow-capped wilderness without the fear of careening down the wrong side of a slope! Join a tour to follow trails deep into the forests. Along the way, you will come up close and personal with snow-covered old growth trees, and the occasional curious bird and furry animal.

All you and your family need to do is to bring along a sense of adventure. If you wish to take your time wandering in the white wilderness, consider renting the snowshoes to explore the terrain at leisure. Or you can sign up for a guided tour—expert guides will share insights on just how ancient some of the Whistler Blackcomb trees are while introducing the different wildlife that you may encounter. There are half-day and full-day tours to choose from, depending on how much of Whistler you wish to explore.

Appreciate the vast rolling mountains of Whistler and Blackcomb

In winter, the Whistler mountains are full of snow-covered wonder, with unique places that you can experience with your family. Hidden off the main runs on Whistler and Blackcomb are the Magic Castle and Tree Fort, a snowy play area perfect for the kids to frolic in when taking a break from skiing.

The Magic Castle is a children’s adventure park on Blackcomb, above the base of the Catskinner chair. It is accessible via Easy Out, while the Tree Fort on Whistler is just off Bear Cub trail, near the Big Red Express. Your little ones can ride down tree slides, walk on bridges and explore the towers.

The Magic Castle and Tree Fort is almost like the ultimate winter clubhouse for kids and the young at heart. For the adults looking to just relax, pick a spot somewhere, anywhere, to sit—you will be rewarded with sweeping views of a wintry wonderland.
