Best Places to Take Holiday Photos in Singapore

Tropical Singapore may not experience the four seasons. But it more than makes up for it by celebrating the year-end holiday season in a big way, with the annual Christmas and New Year Light Up.

As the Yuletide season beckons from November to December, the Lion City transforms into a technicolour wonderland—one that glows and sparkles well into the night.

If you enjoy taking photographs, be heartened as Singapore’s shopping districts and tourist hot spots illuminate spectacularly at night, spreading festive cheer throughout the last month of the year.

Get ready your DSLRs, micro-4/3rds, and smartphone cameras as the team at Pan Pacific Singapore brings you to the best places to take beautiful Christmas and New Year photos in Singapore.

1. An Illuminated Christmas at Singapore’s Most Popular Shopping Street

If there is one place you have to visit in Singapore during the Yuletide season, it is the city-state’s most famous shopping street—Orchard Road. Since 1983, the yearly Christmas light-up along the 2.88km shopping belt is highly awaited by locals and tourists alike.

Each year bears a different theme, dazzling visitors with its stunning lights, thematic designs, and ornate displays. To further brighten the cityscape, malls along the stretch join in the fun with their own Christmas-themed displays and lights on their facades. Some even throw in “snow” effects—a big hit with the little ones.

The photo opportunity which best captures the spirit of Christmas along Orchard Road is the major junction between ION Orchard mall and TANGS mall where Orchard Road meets Scotts Road. This is where a brilliantly lit and intricately designed arch would welcome visitors to the strip. The ideal spot to snap a picture of this arch is at the front of Shaw Centre—here you can not only capture the arch, but take in the stunning Christmas Lights display in front of one of the road’s biggest mall, ION Orchard.

What is Christmas without Christmas trees? Veer off the main Orchard Road for a spell and pop into Ngee Ann City, where a massive Christmas tree sits in its foyer, rising three levels high. You will need a wide-angle lens to capture the entire tree in your shot.

To explore the illuminated wonders of the entire street, start at around 7:30pm at Tanglin Mall, and end your photographic Christmas lights journey at Plaza Singapura.

Each of its seven zones features uniquely themed Christmas trees and lights, so be sure to have your camera ready as you journey through each zone.

Beyond the Christmas decorations, movie characters such as Minions from Despicable Me, Shrek and Princess Fiona would come dressed in their festive best for a photo meet-and-greet session. There are also Christmas- themed shows, 3D projections and other festive activities that thrills both the young ones and the young at heart.

Be prepared to set your camera on fireworks mode to capture the dazzling fireworks show that caps your Christmas adventure in the park. For the best angle to take the fireworks, stand at the main street, in front of the lagoon in the centre of the park.

4. Marvel at the Magical Sparkling Lights of Marina Bay

Singapore City Marina Bay at Night Singapore City Marina Bay at Night

The Marina Bay area comes alive every night, with the towering skyscrapers and commercial buildings providing the perfect backdrop to your holiday photos.

As the year-end period dawns, position yourself to snap photos of yourself against famous landmarks like the Merlion, The Esplanade Theatres on the Bay, as well the Helix Bridge. You may also wish to take a bumboat ride from various embarkation points along the Singapore River—train your cameras to catch photos of the different architectural features of the Singapore skyline as your vessel glides on the calm waters of the bay at night.

Towards the New Year’s Eve period (30 to 31 December), nightly fireworks on the bay add an exploding kaleidoscope of colours and patterns which illuminate the night sky. If you wish to take photographs of the fireworks, the best places to position your camera (and your tripod, which is highly recommended) are the Esplanade, the Promontory, the Merlion Park, Helix Bridge, or the Marina Bay Sands Event Plaza.
